Five Feet Apart - 4 Sterne

Perfect for fans of John Green's "The Fault in Our Stars": An entertaining and emotional Y/A novel telling the story of two teenagers with chronic disease in their organs and hopes in their hearts.

Both Stella and Will suffer from cystic fibrosis (CF), an autoimmune disease which causes the body to overproduce mucus, with detrimental effects on the lungs and other vital organs. All CFers need to keep a safe distance – six feet – at all times due to the high risk of cross-infection and subsequent death. But when Will's and Stella's paths cross, minds mingle and bodies long.

Rachael Lippincott's novel is dedicated to Claire Wineland, a real-life CFer who succumbed to CF in late 2018 at age 21. I have been following her and TheFreyLife on YouTube for years, so I had to read it. The book was a page-turner – Lippincott's writing style flows easily, and the story is amusing as well as enthralling. Being a teenie romance, however, it was at times also quite cliché and cheesy; and some parts of the plot felt a little forced / unnecessary to me. All in all, it was a good read with more potential. I would give it 3.5/5 stars; but as it raises awareness for CF, I gave it 4/5.
